Funimation vs Crunchyroll

Being an anime fan isn’t easy, One of the big problems we face is to pick the right streaming service to watch our favorite shows, Funimation vs Crunchyroll?

There are tons of anime popular streaming services like Netflix which is one of the best streaming platforms out there but not very well suited for the shortage of animes.

Hulu on the other hand is decent when it comes to anime streaming but it just contains so many ads.

And I think we all can relate when I say Free Anime Websites are just so spammy looking with way too many ads popping up.

Funimation and Crunchyroll are the best of the two premium streaming services out there. After doing a lot of searching for the best streaming service I came across these two.

It doesn’t offer the most amazing experience. However, I do visit it multiple times a day to check up on the latest anime news which is free of-course

2. Funimation

Funimation vs Crunchyroll

Funimation is a US-based entertainment company owned by Sony, involved in the distribution of various anime series.

It is a legal company every anime they have dubbed have been licensed by the original distributors of the show And since the streaming service is owned by the Funimation the company I would say it very legal.

The company has been at the forefront of anime dubbing for some time, with many of its exclusive content quickly dubbed into English.

Anime fans will fondly remember Funimation, the company that brought the synchronized version of Dragonball Z to Cartoon Network in the 1990s and which led to renewed interest in the art form.

You can watch both subbed and dubbed anime available on Funimation, I myself love to watch animes in dubbed but since not all animes are dubbed its good to have a streaming service that offers both subs and dubs for you to choose from.

I love watching animes in dubbed and I have been using Funimation for over years now and I haven’t been disappointed.

Platforms Availability

Crunchyroll is available on a variety of platforms including mobile devices and gaming platforms such as Windows, iOs, Android, Playstation 4, Playstation 3, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Crunchyroll has yet to launch an app from the Nintendo switch.

The apps tends to be a bit laggy and unresponsive at times and often crashes. So, it might not be the app for you if you are want to stream anime on-the-go.

On the other hand, Funimation is available on almost all similar platforms and a few more than Crunchyroll.

However, like Crunchyroll the Funimation apps are also buggy and unresponsive at times. Someday you will be able to watch an anime without a problem and other days you wouldn’t be able to no matter how many times you tried.

Crunchyroll: Better Subtitles

If you’ve been watching anime on Crunchyroll and Funimation you can see a clear difference between the two. Crunchyroll uses subtitles and Funimation uses closed captions. Which are not that distracting when you watch anime on on Crunchyroll because they have a pure white outlined with a black font.

While Funimation uses closed captions which are quite distracting with the black background which can’t be turned off from the app. It takes a bit of getting used to it at first.

Crunchyroll: Modern Anime

Dr. Stone

While Funimation does have the new hot upcoming animes, their catalog is mainly popular for the classical animes of the past such as Guilty Crown, Steins;Gate and Psycho-Pass for your nostalgic pleasure. So if you prefer the classical animes of the past, Funimation is your pick.

On the other hand, Crunchyroll does offer classical animes but their catalog is mainly tended towards the new and upcoming popular series such as Sword Art Online, Attack on Titan, and One piece or whichever anime is currently popular among the people because the rankings are affected by the fans.

Funimation: Better Description

When you visit Crunchyroll from your computer or the app you can start watching animes immediately with just a few clicks but if you want to know more about the anime you are about to watch there is but a short description which isn’t that helpful. In that case, you can watch the anime clips from their youtube channel.

While Funimation has a bit more details to it such as you can check the star-based reviews on the app and on your pc, the different languages you can select such as English or Japanese, and the quality of the anime. However, you can watch the anime clips available on the app to help you understand the animation style of the anime and more.

Funimation: Higher Quality Classical Animes

Of-course both Funimation and Crunchyroll have higher quality HD animes available but Funimation has taken a step ahead and updated the classic animes such as Code Geass, Attack on Titan, Guilty Crown and more to look 1080p rather than the original 480p.

Funimation is most definitely the place if you wish to watch classical animes also when you check up on an anime you will also see the quality of which the animes are available. This is useful when you don’t want to watch anime in lower quality.

Funimation vs Crunchyroll

Funimation vs Crunchyroll both of these streaming services have their strengths and weaknesses but it ultimately depends on your preference.

If you are someone who prefers dubbed anime over subbed ones, I do recommend that you choose Funimation, I have been using it for a long time and I still prefer it over any other streaming service.

On the other hand Crunchyroll is the main go-to website for anime streaming. Since the majority of the otakus prefers subbed animes over the dubbed ones and not just that. It is the official anime release website and news source. However, you Crunchyroll does offer dubbed animes but Funimation offers simuldub which means the animes are dubbed at the same time as they are released in Japan.

It makes sense to choose any of them, both of those websites are great at what they do.
